NATIVE vegetation has received a helping hand with volunteers removing weedy invaders at The Passage in Port Fairy on Sunday.
The popular surfing spot on South Beach was tidied up by 10 volunteers who helped remove mirror brush, also known as shiny leaf, from the fragile coastal habitat. Conservation Volunteers Australia project officer Hannah Cooke said the environmental weed took over native vegetation.
“It can cover a large area quite quickly,” she said.
Volunteers have been meeting regularly on weekends and weekdays to remove the invasive vegetation.
“There is a fair amount of native vegetation here already but we want to encourage more,” Ms Cooke said.
Volunteer Tony Bishop was happy to help. “I usually come for a walk and I noticed the mirror bush was getting out of control,” he said.
The next restoration sessions are today and tomorrow.
