Roughly 5000 hectares is earmarked to be burnt at the state border district of Rennick along the Princes Highway between Dartmoor and Mount Gambier.
A further 500 hectares will be burnt in the Cobboboonee State Park west of Heywood during the same period as the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) takes advantage of the mild weather.
DEPI district manager Mike Harper said some south-west residents may notice smoke over the next few days.
He said the south-west was the only region in Victoria where major planned burns were being conducted this week.
“The conditions at the moment are right for planned burns — we’ve had some rain but not enough to hamper the effectiveness of the burns,” Mr Harper said.
