The gas barbecue was tossed aside in favour of more traditional cooking techniques as part of Connecting to Culture day.
Koori pupils from Port Fairy Consolidated School, Warrnambool, Warrnambool West and Koroit primary schools gathered for a day of indigenous games, food and activities.
East Warrnambool’s Koori education officer Kate Buchanan said it was a relaxed, fun day.
“One of our parents, Paul Wright, was at school from about 8am preparing the coals in our traditional fire pit,” she said.
“He helped the children cook up prawns, mussels and fish with local traditional herbs from our indigenous garden project.”
Principal Lindy Sharp said the day was a special part of the curriculum.
“It’s very important for us to make sure our indigenous pupils are connected to their culture and this is just one way we do that.”
