The 950-metre-long crushed granite route will be combined with a swale drain and vegetation to help filter water before it enters Russells Creek.
It is part of a $338,000 project to extend shared pathways through north-east Warrnambool.
A 400m section of concrete path along Dales Road and a 300m granitic path through Brierly Reserve will also be built.
City council infrastructure director Peter Robertson said the 2.5-metre wide paths would carry pedestrians and cyclists.
“They will provide a link between north-east Warrnambool and the city centre via Cramer Street, which has an established bicycle lane,” he said.
“The Victorian government has put $200,000 towards this project while the council is contributing $138,000. Work will be completed by the end of April”.
