The Moyne Shire Council has announced that stage one of the streetscape works will begin in the first week of May after council accepted a winning tender on Tuesday.
Stage one will focus on Sackville Street and will come at a cost of $1.3 million, funded jointly by the council and the state government and is expected to take about 14 weeks to complete.
Work will include road and footpath re-surfacing, new street furniture and an upgrade of the Bank and Sackville streets roundabout.
Also part of stage one is work on the Village Green, which will include new vegetation and the installation of new street furniture.
Moyne Shire director of physical services Trev Greenberger said the occupants of Sackville Street will be kept informed on the progress of the works.
“We will be holding information sessions with the traders in Sackville Street in the next couple of weeks,” he said.
“Through the life of the project we will continue to meet with the traders to keep them informed of what the next step is because there will be some disturbances to the flow of the CBD.”
The Port Fairy Streetscape Committee is trying to raise $300,000 to have the Sackville Street footpaths paved in bluestone rather than asphalt and has so far raised about $100,000.
Council has agreed to lay bluestone as part of the project, with how much dependent on the amount the streetscape committee raises.
The committee is offering those who contribute significantly to have their name etched into a special section of bluestone.
Streetscape committee member Peter Bond is urging people to take the chance to make a real difference and donate.
“Bluestone will be there forever and it will also lift the whole appearance of the CBD,” Mr Bond said.
