Just a few months after winning a bronze medal in Port Macquarie’s National Natvia Golden Bean Roasting Competition, Piccolo Coffee Roasters last week won two more for its decaf and espresso blends.
The café beat about 500 other roasters from throughout the country at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show, giving its decaf blend a second bronze medal to go up on the café wall.
Owner Carmel Brady said Piccolo’s beans were roasted “medium city”, combining trial and error with advice from coffee magazines and major expositions, while its decaffeinated blend used the “Swiss water process” and was freshly roasted on site.
“The espresso is our house blend, just everyday drinking coffee for anybody that walks into the shop,” she said.
“It’s probably the most popular one people buy to take home as well.
“People love the fact that our coffee is recognised. It’s confirmation when they think it tastes good and they see it up on the wall that the judges liked it too.”
Mrs Brady said it was exciting to have repeat success in competition.
“We’d never entered anything before that. We’ve been here just over four years and it took a year just to get roasting off the ground.
“We’ll probably look around for a few more competitions now. It gives you confidence and something to aspire to.
“We won bronze this time so we will look at the judges’ feedback and see what we can improve on and raise the bar a little bit to hopefully do better next time.”
