Member for Wannon Dan Tehan yesterday presented Kyden with $500 under the Local Sporting Champions grants.
The funding will be used to help cover the cost of travelling expenses for Kyden, who has already racked up some frequent flyer points in 2014.
In January Kyden was part of the Australian under 15 team that travelled to South Africa.
He was selected after starring for the Hampden and Victorian Schoolboys’ teams last season.
While in South Africa, Kyden and his teammates experienced life both on and off the field.
“We played three games against the South African Lions, which is made up of players aged 18 to 25 and it is their team which will come to Australia for the International Cup in August,” Kyden said.
“The grounds were a bit rough but we won the three games pretty easily, so it was a good experience.
“And we got to have a look around when we weren’t playing, which was a bit of an eye-opener. Some of things you see does shock you a bit.”
Now back on home soil, Kyden has settled back into school at Warrnambool College, where he is in year 11.
He is dividing his time between training with South Warrnambool’s under 18 team and North Ballarat Rebels’ under 16 side.
While he will play for the Roosters’ under 18s this season, Kyden is also hoping to make the cut when the Rebels finalise their under 16 team next week.
Kyden is coming off not only a successful 2013 season at representative level but also for his club. He was named best on ground in South Warrnambool’s under 16 grand final win over Cobden.
He is hoping for another strong season and to catch the eye of those in high places. His aim is to be accepted in the Australian Institute of Sport football intake.
Warrnambool hockey player Jack White has also received funding through the Local Sporting Champions grant.
Jack was a member of the Victorian under 15 hockey team that competed in the national titles last October.
