What started out as a show of support for the event ended with Timboon’s first Cobden Cup victory in 20 years.
The team of Donna Weller, Vera Convey and Karon McKenzie claimed a 12-shot triumph in the combined stroke handicap event at the picturesque Cobden golf course.
“It was a late entry because we didn’t get the flyer,” Weller said.
“I rang up Saturday morning because we like to put a team in the events around the area.
“We were turning up to make a donation for the day.”
Weller, who plays off a handicap of 11, heaped praise on her teammates for “carrying” her after finishing with a round of nett 77. Convey, playing off 21, had a nett 68 and McKenzie, off 33, had a nett 67, giving the side a nett total of 212.
Convey produced the best score of the day off the stick in B grade, while McKenzie led C grade.
They were 12 clear of a Cobden combination comprising Carmel Darcy (nett 76), Di McKenzie (nett 74) and Ellen Darcy (nett 74). Ellen had the best nett score in A grade.
Weller said Timboon had only won the title once since the first event in 1992 and that was in 1994. The same side, plus Judith Wallace, will attempt to make it two in a week when it contests Warrnambool’s Marj Robinson Bowl next week.
Camperdown’s Janelle Lambell won yesterday’s B grade nett section, while Cobden’s Jo Hintum won the C grade nett section.
Cobden Golf Club’s ladies vice-captain Janelle Rohan said the course was in great condition.
“The scores probably didn’t indicate how good it was,” she said.
“The course is magnificent at the moment.”
The week of golf events continues today with a men’s four ball better ball stableford competition.
A 26-hole stroke competition will be held on Saturday.
