Portland police Sergeant Ryan Nelson said the 36-year-old from Hamlyn Heights was arrested at 6.20pm on Thursday after police received information from the public.
It is understood the man has been charged with a number of offences relating to thefts from about six vehicles.
He was bailed to appear in the Portland Magistrates Court next Tuesday.
Sergeant Nelson said the items allegedly stolen included wet suits, tools and sporting equipment.
