Since 2009, Dr Basarin has provided students with the opportunity to travel to Gallipoli to attend the Anzac Day Dawn and Lone Pine ceremonies.
Dr Basarin completed his PhD thesis at Deakin University entitled Battle-field Tourism: Anzac Day Commemorations at Galli-poli, which investigated the motives of attendance at Anzac Day events in Gallipoli. This February he will present a talk at Deakin, offering Warrnambool a rare opportunity to learn about Gallipoli from a Turkish point of view.
Dr Basarin was born in Istanbul, Turkey, and migrated to Australia in 1973.
In 2005, he received the Victorian Premier’s Award for Excellence in Multicultural Affairs for his long-time work on presenting the Turkish side of the tragic campaign at Gallipoli in 1915.
Dr Basarin also works as a project manager for Gallipoli Cruise 2015, a 36-day cruise to Gallipoli which will trace the steps of Australia soldiers on the 100th anniversary of the landing.
The talk will be held at 7pm on February 12, at the Deakin City Centre civic room, Warrnambool.
