Street names have been announced for the first two stages of the Riverside at Wollaston Estate.
The names chosen include Bayer Place, Penfold Drive, Sommerville Boulevard, Toleman Street, Warburton Way and Wiltshire Street.
Warrnambool City Council has a pool of names which can be drawn on when new street names are required.
It was included in the consultation process for Riverside at Wollaston Estate.
Warrnambool Historical Society president Glenys Phillpot said the council had a sound policy in place to name the city’s new streets.
“There is a pool of appropriate names in place that have a significant connection to Warrnambool’s past,” Mrs Phillpot said.
“As an historical society we have had input into names in that pool and occasionally we will submit other names we think are appropriate.
“The council policy is a good one. It is pretty clear cut and it gives all members of the community the chance to submit names they think are worthy.”
Of the list of street names for the Riverside at Wollaston Estate, a variety of people from Warrnambool’s past have been included.
Louis Bayer was a noted musician who called Warrnambool home in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The Sommerville name comes in honour of one of the early pioneers of Warrnambool and district in George Sommerville, while the Toleman name has long been linked to the city.
Those who served their country in the heat of battle have also been remembered, with the Warburton name linked to the memory of Graham Warburton, who was one of the first local soldier’s killed in the Vietnam War, while his uncle Aussie Warburton died while a prisoner of war in World War Two.
The name Wiltshire relates to Wallace Hammond, a Warrnambool man who was killed in action in World War One, with the Wiltshire connection from the name of the ship he left Australian shores on for the last time.
Street names already being considered for future stages of the Riverside at Wollaston Estate include Carey, Foyle, Goodall, O’Malley, O’Neill, Struth and Timms.
