Bar operator Edward Mahony said the venture was a success, with hundreds of people coming and going on Friday night despite inclement weather.
Mr Mahony said the bar’s success showed the local community’s desire for something different in hospitality venues.
The liquor licence for The Laneway bar was gained through a temporary extension to that of the adjacent Emperor’s House Chinese restaurant. Mr Mahony said some of the patrons moved into the restaurant after rain fell on Friday evening but many remained.
“It had a good atmosphere,” he said. The bar also enjoyed good trade when it reopened on Sunday.
Mr Mahony intends to operate on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings until 11pm throughout summer.
He said the weekend’s success showed the local community’s social desires were similar to those in Melbourne and elsewhere in the world where pop-up bars had also proved popular.
Mr Mahony said operators of a nearby licensed venue had told him The Laneway bar had generated good trade for their business.
One hundred per cent of the proceeds on opening night was donated to the Peter's Project cancer centre public appeal while 20 per cent of future proceeds will also be directed to the appeal.
