The Gunditjmara and Community Golf Classic raised more than $6000 towards an integrated cancer centre for the south-west.
Warrnambool police Aboriginal community liaison officer Joey Chatfield said in the past the golf classic had been a part of NAIDOC Week and it was recently decided to do something for a good cause.
He said all Aboriginal organisations in the south-west had supported or contributed to the event in some way.
Mr Chatfield said it was also important to raise awareness about the impacts of cancer on the Aboriginal community.
“This does not just affect particular people, it affects everyone,” he said.
According to the Cancer Council Victoria there are more than 90 new diagnoses of cancer each year for Victorian Aboriginal people and cancer incidence rates are higher for indigenous men and women than any other culture in Victoria.
The most common cancers for Victorian Aboriginal people are bowel, breast, lung and prostate.
Mr Chatfield said each organisation was happy to support Peter’s Project and every dollar coming in was worthwhile.
