Wannon Water started the $1 million project last week and expects to complete it by early April.
More than two kilometres of pipes will be laid from Jamieson Street to Wollaston Road, via Botanic Road and Bromfield Street, to serve the new North of the Merri residential zone.
Wannon Water managing director Grant Green said the project was crucial in providing future growth in Warrnambool’s north.
“Over time this subdivision will expand to include up to 1600 new properties and the new feeder main will ensure Wannon Water can provide these with secure and reliable services,” Mr Green said.
“The feeder main is the primary pipeline to transfer treated drinking water from the treatment plant.
“It will complement the subdivision’s new sewer main and pump station which Wannon Water constructed earlier this year.” Both mains have a 100-year life expectancy.
Warrnambool-based contractor Cri-tech Plumbing is using a horizontal boring technique to lay pipes under roads and minimise traffic disruption.
The same technique will also be used to bore underneath Russells Creek to protect the environment.
“Construction works in Botanic Road will be limited to the nature strip on the southern side of the road and will occur in January school holidays to avoid disrupting school traffic,” Mr Green said.
