A vaulting demonstration by riders from Van Someren Equestrian was one of the highlights of the group’s Christmas break-up this week.
Warrnambool Riding for the Disabled’s Brenda Hetherington said the performance captivated the children.
Sharyn Van Someren said horse vaulting, which is similar to gymnastics on horses, was slowly gaining popularity in Australia.
“It was a lovely day, the kids had a great day,” she said.
“They saw things they didn’t know existed.”
The children were also treated to lollies, a barbecue and a special visit from Santa.
Ms Hetherington said next year the association would have about 35 participants from Warrnambool and the surrounding district.
She said the association was always looking for more volunteers and next year was expected to be bigger and better with more coaches coming through.
“You don’t have to have horse experience,” she said.
Warrnambool Riding for the Disabled meets every Wednesday between 10.30am and 3pm at the Highview Horse Complex.
