The 23-year-old man told police he was walking home after a night out in the CBD when he was confronted by a group of at least six people about 12.30am yesterday at the intersection of Queen and Pollock streets.
Detective Senior Constable Mick Palmer of the Colac criminal investigation unit said it was understood the group of males and females confronted the victim and punched him several times, causing minor injuries.
“During the altercation a knife was produced, but not used,” he said.
“The man escaped from the attack and ran about 300 metres to the police station where he received assistance.
“Our investigations are continuing and we would ask anyone with relevant information to contact us.”
He said two males were believed to have been in the area at the time and may be able to assist police.
