Darcy Edwards, Sam Hyland and Julian Claridge joined Warrnambool Bowls Club this season and have moved up from division four to division one in the space of 10 weeks.
Edwards and Hyland are in Warrnambool White, while Claridge is settling into Warrnambool Blue’s line-up.
“I think once everyone has a go at it everyone would enjoy it,” Edwards said.
“We were a little apprehensive but now we’re there it’s good fun.”
Edwards, 26, played division three cricket for Brierly-Christ Church but said he was “no good”.
“I played cricket last year but was a bit sick of that,” he said.
“With cricket you get sick of making no runs all day but with bowls there’s always something going on.
“It is addictive I reckon and the social side is pretty good.”
Edwards, Hyland and Claridge took little time to adjust to their new sport.
But Edwards said consistency was their major bugbear.
“We all started in division four and now we’re in division one,” he said.
“It’s my second week in the White team. I think we’ll stay up there.”
Edwards’ father Mick plays third for Warrnambool Blue.
“My dad plays and I had a couple of rolls with him and it was good fun, that’s the main reason (I started),” he said.
“We go for a bowl together but he doesn’t give me too much advice — he doesn’t want me to get better than him. He’s looking over his shoulder.”
Bottom-placed Warrnambool White travels to play sixth-placed Terang Green today, while third-placed Warrnambool Blue can consolidate its top-four spot with a win against eighth-placed Koroit Blue.
In other round 10 matches, fourth-placed City Memorial Gold meets ladder-leader Warrnambool Gold, Timboon Gold faces a challenge against Port Fairy Red and Dennington Red hosts second-placed City Memorial Red.
