Snake catcher Scott Grant said he had been called out three times over the weekend to remove snakes from gardens — although one was mistaken identity with a blue-tongue lizard while another appeared to have made a quick escape.
“They’re already on the move,” Mr Grant said.
“This is going to be the time they start moving, especially once we get some consistently warmer weather.”
Mr Grant’s Terang-based business — West Vic Reptiles — has spent the past few months completing a count around the south-west to gain some idea on what species were thriving.
“I think this year going by the numbers we’re going to see plenty around,” he said.
While society has a special fear reserved just for snakes, Mr Grant said they were misunderstood animals that were normally harmless if left alone.
“Ninety per cent of snake bites occur when people try to kill the animal,” he said.
“No one ever gets bitten just walking away.”
