The former Warrnambool College student was the highest achiever over the three years of his bachelor of pharmaceutical science, receiving 23 high distinctions out of 24 units.
His performance earned him the pharmacy gold medal at Monash’s faculty of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences award ceremony held in June at the Cossar Hall in Parkville.
Mr Phillips, who moved to Melbourne to pursue his studies, said he appreciated the reward for his hard work.
“I studied a lot throughout the whole course, but it was important to me to keep a good balance and see friends,” he said.
After graduating at the end of 2012, he spent the summer with family in Warrnambool, before working for two months as a laboratory assistant at Incitec Pivot Limited in Southbank at Melbourne.
He has now secured a role as an analytical chemist at Select Solutions in Yarraville, and is excited for the opportunity to grow and develop his skills.
Mr Phillips advised anyone striving for academic success to keep in touch with the activities they enjoy doing.
“Don’t give up on anything that you love doing, like sport or surfing, otherwise you will burn out,” he said.
