A CFA warning initially described the grassfire as small but fast moving and out of control, until about 5.30pm when 12 units were able to control the blaze.
The fire, which started on a roadside, was two kilometres west of Port Fairy and adjacent to the Princes Highway, moving east.
It is unclear at this stage how the fire started but The Standard will continue to provide updates this weekend.
