Kathryn Keirl, 48, of Lofven Street, Ballarat, pleaded guilty to nine charges of theft when she appeared in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court yesterday.
Eight of the charges related to a 24-hour period beginning on September 25 this year.
The court heard Keirl’s crime spree began with hauls of DVDs from Gateway Plaza’s Kmart store and two separate hits on the Target store, one of which yielded $810 worth of DVDs.
She also stole children’s items from the Lincraft store on the Princes Highway before heading back to Gateway Plaza where she stole more DVDs.
The court heard the next day Keirl returned to Lincraft and stole children’s Textas, before continuing to Kmart at Gateway Plaza, adding another $400 worth of DVDs to her haul.
Keirl was arrested and produced a handbag stolen from Strandbags at Gateway Plaza in August, the court heard. All of the stolen items have been returned to the victims.
The court heard Keirl had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and was unable to explain the offending.
Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt was presented with a report from a psychologist which noted that Keirl was a kleptomaniac. He said Keirl had five pages of priors for similar offending.
Mr Kelstadt adjourned the hearing to February 26 so that Keirl could be assessed by a psychiatrist.
Her bail was extended.
