Moyne Shire Council has voted to include the hopes of two Koroit brothers as part of its recreation strategy.
With nothing to skate on except broken footpaths, eight-year-old Ashley McCall and his 10-year-old brother Rudi collected 167 local signatures calling for council to support a skate park in their town.
Council last week signalled it would pursue the idea next year by passing a motion to consider a skate park in its recreation strategy.
Cr Colin Ryan commended the young brothers for their effort.
“I think it’s good that the kids of Koroit have gotten together to let us know what is needed,” Cr Ryan said.
“Hopefully we can work towards achieving what these kids want.”
Moyne Shire director of physical services Trev Greenberger said council was also exploring the option of purchasing a mobile skate park, which could be used in towns across the shire.
Council already has one such mobile park based in Kirkstall.
Mr Greenberger said council would know whether it could pursue a permanent option if it received $30,000 in state funding in the second half of next year.
“We’ll go out to the people who suggested it and recommend some of the things they can do in the meantime, such as fund-raising,” Mr Greenberger said.
The motion to consider the skate park in the recreation strategy was supported unanimously by councillors.
