Warrnambool and District Cricket Association chief junior selector Terry Hoy has picked two even sides he hopes can be competitive in the testing tournament.
He said that WDCA selectors also had an eye to the future with six bottom-age players being included in the two teams.
“We seem to have a very strong top-age group of boys, with many performing well in both the under 15s and under 17 competitions,” he said.
“Of the bottom-age boys we’ve picked Joe Medew-Ewen, Ben Rantall, Aiden Payne, Jeremy Stacey, Brad Worden and Jack Neave. It will be a development experience for them and they’ll get some opportunities to shine during the week.”
Hoy said Aiden and Brad were talented quicks, Joe an accurate leg-spinner, Ben an all-rounder, Jeremy a handy left-arm bowler and Jack a top-order bat.
Warrnambool Blue won the Horsham title last year under Woodford coach John Houston. Rookie coach Danny Rook takes over this year.
The blue side includes Otto Opperman (Merrivale), Matt Price (Brierly/Nestles), Sam McKinnon (Dennington), Brad Parsons, Joe Dwyer, Joe Medew-Ewen (Port Fairy), Sam Hoy (Koroit), Anthony Rook (Russells Creek), Will Templeton, Adam Sell, Tom Smith (West Warrnambool), Ben Rantall (Dennington) and Aiden Payne (Allansford).
Hoy said Warrnambool Gold would again be led by coach Andrew Thomson. The team includes Ben Threlfall, Jye Turland, Will Mills (West Warrnambool), Connor Richardson (Woodford), Jayden Stokie (Wesley CBC), Colin Harwood (Port Fairy), Josh Lock, Jeremy Stacey (Dennington), Jack Neave (Merrivale), Billy Thomson, Jeremy Kiensrod, Sam Melican and Brad Wordan (Russells Creek).
Hoy said it hadn’t been an easy selection process, with some talented boys missing out.
“We’ll train again the next two Mondays (December 13 and 20) at Russells Creek’s Mack Oval from 5pm.”
