The 16-year-old apprentice jockey used his three-kilogram claim to good effect, guiding New Zealand galloper Angelology to a tight win over the Aaron Purcell-trained Single Warrior.
Angelology, trained by Kiwi Kevin Myers, was to have carried the second top weight of 60 kilograms. But in his second start on Australian soil since being based with Myers at Paddy Payne snr’s stables in Ballarat, the three-kilogram claim was decisive. They held on for a 0.3-length victory after being challenged twice by Single Warrior in the straight.
Childs and Angelology ($1.65-favourite) jumped well and took up the front running and after seemingly kicking clear entering the straight before their Warrnambool rival loomed up at the 200-metre mark.
They kicked again and looked to be clear only for Single Warrior ($6) to fly home in the final 50 metres.
Childs has made a big impact in the saddle with Myers, riding a winning double, including the Wycheproof Cup, for the veteran trainer last Saturday.
South-west trainers shared the spoils yesterday with Barbara Marshman (Sharmarino, race one), Paul McKenna (Mannaconi, race two), Purcell (Celebrity Psychic, race three) and Jarrod McLean (Mango Mojito, race six) all producing winners. Jockey Damian Lane took the riding honours with a double.
