Mr Robert, who announced he would step down earlier this month, tendered his resignation on Thursday.

The resignation will trigger a by-election in his Gold Coast seat Fadden.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for House of Representatives Speaker Milton Dick said dates for the by-election were being considered, with an announcement on the timing to be made soon.

Mr Robert was first elected to the seat in 2007 and served in roles including employment minister, skills minister and NDIS minister during the previous coalition government.

Mr Robert suffered a 3.5 per cent swing against him at the last election.

The coalition holds the safe seat by more than 10 per cent.

Australian National University's Professor Mark Kenny said Labor would be seriously considering whether it should contest Fadden.

"It's highly unlikely there will be a repeat of Aston - Fadden is a completely different seat and has a more significant margin to overcome," he told AAP.

Labor won the Victorian seat in a shock victory last month after former Liberal minister Alan Tudge quit politics.

Prof Kenny said although unlikely, if the LNP lost Fadden to the government it would be "devastating" for Opposition Leader Peter Dutton's leadership.

"That would look very bad for Dutton ... if in his home state he's not cutting it there, he's not going to cut it anywhere in Australia," he said.

Multiple scandals have plagued Mr Robert's political career, including the illegal robodebt scheme which cost the taxpayer almost $2 billion in a court settlement.

Several years ago, he was forced to return a luxury Rolex watch gifted to him by a Chinese billionaire during a trip to the country.

Mr Robert also had to repay $38,000 to the government for excessive home internet bills.

It comes as speculation mounts that former prime minister Scott Morrison will also quit parliament by the end of the year.

He was previously expected to resign during the parliamentary sitting days for the federal budget.

Two candidates have nominated for LNP preselection - Gold Coast Council planning chief Cameron Caldwell and former Queenslander of the Year Dr Dinesh Palipana.

Party nominations for the seat close on Friday.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Labor was yet to decide if it would contest Fadden, talking down expectations about winning the very safe Liberal seat.

Mr Albanese had described Mr Robert's absence from parliament during the budget sitting - after the coalition MP had announced his intentions - as "completely unacceptable".
