Ms Almhofer received the highest mark in the final exam of medical students across all four Deakin campuses, a total of 111 students.

She has studied in Warrnambool for the final two years of her medical degree, having spent the previous two years at the Waurn Ponds campus.

The success will open up new career opportunities for Ms Almhofer, who came to the course after spending five years working as a nurse.

Originally from Melbourne, Ms Almhofer was keen to return to the University for her medical training after gaining her nursing qualification with the university.

"I absolutely loved it. I had had a good experience with Deakin in my nursing degree and was keen to come to Warrnambool as I had enjoyed visiting when I was younger," she said.

"It is a small group which allows doctors to spend more time working directly with students.

"All of the students have appreciated the efforts and generosity of the hospital clinicians, medical school staff, and patients in making the past two years such a rewarding learning experience."

Ms Almhofer will continue her training at St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne next year but hopes to continue her links with Warrnambool on rotations.

The course's Director of Clinical Studies, Associate Professor Barry Morphett, said Ms Almhofer's success was a great result for the Warrnambool Clinical School.

"All our students passed their exams which is very pleasing for all concerned," he said.
