There are electricity outages across the south-west as storms cut a swathe through the region from north of Casterton to the Otways.
A Powercor spokesman said crews had restored power to about 50,000 customers across central, northern and western Victoria during the past 48 hours, following storm impacts across the network.
Some Warrnambool customers have been told it will be at least 6pm before their electricity is restored.
"Damage has been largely lightning-related, with crews required to replace damaged power poles and blown transformers," the spokesman said.
"There are 5700 customers currently off supply in the Powercor network, with 2600 in the Terang region, 900 in the Warrnambool area and 600 in the Hamilton area.
"We have been monitoring the weather patterns throughout the week and had increased our field, control and customer centre resources, so we were ready to respond across each of the last three days.
"We will continue keeping customers updated on estimated restoration times via our website and direct SMS notifications.
The spokesman said that with more storms forecast, a checklist for customers on how to prepare for summer power outages was available at www.powercor.com.au and includes advice on:
- Look after your health - particularly if you rely on life support equipment and need a back-up plan
- Stay connected - by having mobile phones and laptop computers charged to stay connected with family and friends
- Beware of fallen powerlines - always assume they are live, stay 10m away and call us immediately
- Have back-up energy ready - like batteries, lamps and barbeques and have your eskies ready
- Stay up to date - visit our website to choose your preferences for getting notifications from CitiPower and Powercor about power supplies.
Friday, at 7.15am:
Power appears to be restored to much of the south-west after more than 2000 customers were left without electricity on Thursday evening.
Areas still impacted according to the Powercor outage map include Hexham, Caramut, Glenthompson, Dunkeld, Mortlake, Swans Marsh, Gellibrand and Dartmoor.
Powercor has been contacted for more up-to-date information.
Thursday, 7pm: More than 2000 people have been left without power throughout the south-west after a thunderstorm swept through the region on Thursday afternoon.
The outages stretch from Warrnambool down past Port Campbell to the south-east, north to Pura Pura and across to Chatsworth, with almost every area inside that zone affected.
While Powercor initially estimated power wouldn't be restored to affected areas until midday on Friday, they have updated that to 2.30am for most areas.
In Mortlake alone there are almost 1000 people powerless after the storm, while Derrinallum has more than 300 residents without power.
The storms have hit other parts of Victoria, with Powercor saying nearly 8,500 people are "off supply" across the state.
Anyone affected can see the live status using the following link.
Powercor said more storms are expected, which will likely hit the network further.
"Further storms and lightning are on the way and expected to hit our networks this afternoon and again tomorrow.
"While we can't control the weather, make sure you're prepared in the event of any possible power outages."
