Roosters female football co-ordinator Jock O'Connor said while helpful, a strong background in the sport was not required.

He said it could suit someone with coaching experience in another sport.

"I think it's time - it just makes sense to have more female involvement and female perspective," O'Connor said.

"I am more than happy to mentor or help out but I think for female footy to go ahead, there needs to be more involvement."

O'Connor said "good ambition and good communication skills" would help in the role.

"We have good numbers and a good side but who you appoint as coach makes a difference," he said.

"It is going to be an important appointment."

Brenton O'Rourke - the club's first female coach who led it to its inaugural premiership in 2019 - has stepped aside due to family reasons.

"He was fantastic for us and did a great job," O'Connor said.

"He was really enthusiastic and imparted a lot of knowledge and competitiveness."

Chris Meade will remain in his role as South Warrnambool under 18 coach.

"He's been absolutely brilliant," O'Connor said.

The Western Victoria Female Football League season is tipped to start in April.
