In The Boat under the urgings of apprentice jockey Alana Kelly hung on to defeat Marine One by a short neck with Gabeira back in third spot in the 1100 metre race.
From his seven starts In The Boat has won four races and finished in the minor placegetters stall on three occasions.
The astute trainer praised the ride by the in-form Kelly.
"It was a very good ride by Alana," Smith told The Standard.
"She drew a wide barrier on In The Boat and allowed the horse to use his pace and cross the field. I think Alana has a very bright future.
"I've always had a good opinion of In The Boat. He's been very consistent as his record shows. With a bit of luck he might have been five wins from seven starts but that's racing.
"He's got a great racing style. I've got my fingers crossed that I might get him out to races over 1400 metres in the future. We're not going down that path just yet we'll keep him for sprint races.
"His next start may be at Moonee Valley on January 29. I think the Valley would suit his style of racing."
Kelly said drawing the wide barrier was a real asset for In The Boat's hopes of winning the race.
In The Boat was the first leg of a winning double for Kelly. Her other winner was Open Minded for Anthony and Sam Freedman.
