Smith has numerous runners at Warrnambool on Sunday including Mr Cancun in the $40,000 Koroit Cup over 1700 metres.
Mr Cancun ran second behind stablemate Garimpeiro in last week's Woodford Cup.
The multiple group one-winning trainer, who has trained numerous cup winners including Colac, Terang, Port Fairy and Warrnambool since moving to Victoria from Western Australia, said Mr Cancun had pulled up well after his minor placing in the Woodford Cup.
"I thought Sunday's Koroit Cup is an ideal race for Mr Cancun," Smith told The Standard.
"He's very fit. We haven't had to do much work with him over the last week because he's in peak condition.
"We took him down to the beach for a couple of swims during the week and some wading in the water.
"I'm very happy with his condition leading into the Koroit Cup. It looks a very even race. It's a small field but there are numerous chances."
Smith said the lightly raced five-year-old could then have a break.
"I'll just see how he pulls up after Sunday," he said.
"I've got it in the back of my mind to set him for races like the Terang and Warrnambool cups but we'll see how he performs on Sunday before making any firm plans."
Warrnambool Racing Club racecourse manager Daniel Lumsden said the running rail would be out two metres for Sunday's eight-race program. "We had nine millimetres of rain on Thursday night which made for 10 for the week," Lumsden said.
"We've put on 43 millimetres of irrigation earlier in the week.
We're watching the weather forecast closely in the lead up to the races but at this stage we've rated the track a soft five and expect it be be upgraded by Sunday."
