Dunkeld boasts a 4-1 win-loss record in its top-grade debut after taking all before it in division two last season.
Former Western Waves cricket manager Stephen Field is part of the Dunkeld side which stunned City Gold 71-58 on Saturday.
"It was an amazing day and high-standard game," he said.
"It was our intention to try and play division one last year but we had to work our way through division two which was fair enough.
"We have a good crew of bowlers. Obviously our membership is pretty small compared to Warrnambool but we have a pretty young side and energetic team that just loves playing with each other."
Field, who has been playing bowls on and off for 15 years, said Dunkeld had added some quality additions to its side this year.
He said they were having an instant impact.
"We do have a lot of players who are in a similar age group, between 35 and 55," he said. "A lot of those guys have been pretty good sportsmen in other areas like cricketers and footballers.
"Plus we've recruited well. We have Chris 'The Buzz' Burrell who comes from Geelong each week and Troy Greed from Hamilton who came on board as well who is a gun.
"David Clements has come over from Dennington. He's added a lot of experience and knowledge to our game."
Playing in the Western District competition is suiting Dunkeld.
"Everything about it has been great, the clubs have been really receptive and the standard of bowls is terrific and we get to play on some great greens," Field said.
"The opposition are not only good players but they've been very social with us after games which has been terrific.
"It is similar (travelling distance). We used to travel to Portland and it's an hour and a half. Warrnambool is only a bit over an hour and our biggest trip now is Timboon which we only do once.
"They're a great club and we're actually looking forward to the drive. It will be good fun and the road trip home will be even more fun."
Field remains heavily involved with his other sporting passion - cricket.
He's the director of women's cricket at Geelong, which is fielding female teams in the Victorian Premier League for the first time. His farming also has ties to cricket.
"We sell cricket pitch soil and we had our first game on the MCG this week," Field said of Northfield Soil.
"We are using the soil from our farm and we're looking forward to expanding that."
Warrnambool Gold remains the only undefeated team after Terang Green forfeited, as confirmed by The Standard on Thursday.
Terang Green walked away from the contest after Warrnambool Gold opted to select a player who has not had the COVID-19 vaccine.
Under state government and Bowls Victoria guidelines, unvaccinated players are permitted to play pennant. But the opposition must be informed 48 hours' prior to the game and the opposition can then decide to forfeit its points.
In other games, Mortlake Blue downed Port Fairy Red 71-51. Port Fairy Red unveiled two new division one players in John McIlroy and Kevin Smith. Warrnambool Blue edged out Timboon Gold by three shots and City Red overcame Koroit Blue 68-47.
