The Cats revealed on Wednesday they'd met with Harding over the weekend where a decision was made due to "work and personal commitments". Harding's senior assistant, Tim Nowell, will take over as interim coach.
"On Monday Ben informed the club in light of these commitments, he felt he would be unable to undertake the role as senior coach," president Shane Murphy said.
"Ben informed the club he would stand down from the coaching position.
"The club accepted his decision to resign. Ben then addressed the senior playing group and informed them of his decision."
Murphy said numbers were strong at the club's first hitout of pre-season.
"On behalf of the club and the playing group, we wish to thank our members and supporters for their ongoing support," he said.
"As soon as the club makes a decision on a replacement senior coach, we will be sure to announce it to you, our football and netball community, immediately."
