Emergency services were called to Digby's Portland-Casterton Road after a passerby located a crashed utility off the side of the road about 5.45pm Sunday.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 57-year-old Merino man, died at the scene.
Hamilton police highway patrol Sergeant Darren Smart said the cause of the crash was still being investigated and a report would be prepared for the coroner.
He said there were short-term road closures until about 8.30pm.
Sergeant Smart urged anyone with information to contact Hamilton highway patrol.
The fatal incident was one of two serious collisions in the Hamilton area over the weekend.
Hamilton police Sergeant Mark Barby said police received reports of a vehicle on its roof near the cemetery about 4.30am Sunday.
"Police attended and there was no person present," he said.
"Inquiries were made and at approximately 10am a 30-year-old male was spoken to in relation to the crash."
Sergeant Barby said there were no reported injuries and inquiries into the cause of the crash were pending.
No charges have been laid.
Sergeant Barby said there were no other vehicles involved.
He urged motorists to be careful on the road.
"It's important to be mindful of the conditions, it's been fairly wet over the weekend and it's particularly dangerous during the night," he said.
