Carlin was at his dazzling best as the Bloods stunned the Blues under lights at The Pond in a result which coach Ben Kenna dubbed as important after a season impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The reigning Warrnambool and District league best and fairest - who played at Nirranda in 2021 - grabbed several clearances while running through the centre as the Bloods worked themselves into the contest.

Warrnambool had several scoring shots early but couldn't capitalise. Terang Mortlake then romped home in the second half to notch the result.

Kenna said the first half was a bit scratchy but was pleased overall.

"Once they got a bit of confidence and continuity in their game they took it from there," he said.

"I think all the clubs involved in this, the kids have missed the best part of two years of football so they're pretty keen.

"I think they didn't take the opportunities in that first half and then when we got that bit of belief in the second half there was a bit of belief and confidence and they probably played a better brand of footy from there."

Bloods defender Ned Arundell said the opportunity to play - especially to raise awareness for the Let's Talk Foundation - was exciting.

"It was a bit wet in the end, but the deck was good and it was a good win for us," he said.

IN OTHER NEWS:

"It was free-flowing when we got going. Scotty Carlin had a few good clearances and 'Hobbsy' was giving us good taps. It was good."

Arundell said the social aspect the initiative created was also a plus.

"It's good to have all the boys together at this time of year, having a kick," he said.

"We'll probably end up having a good night together after these games."
