Detective Sergeant Jason Von Tunk said police received a call to reports of a stabbing at the Portland address about 4pm.
"While the details are at this stage sketchy, it's understood the victim was at that address on a bike with blood on him," he said.
"The 42-year-old male suffered an injury to his right hand and was taken away by ambulance and cared for at the Portland Hospital."
Detective Sergeant Von Tunk said the victim was not admitted to hospital but likely received stitches before being released.
He said police were waiting to speak with the victim but appealed for any witnesses to get in touch.
Anyone with information should contact Portland police on 5522 1500 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
