Daniel Canty, 25, appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Friday charged with obtaining property by deception, theft of a vehicle, dealing with the proceeds of crime, breaching an intervention order, fraudulent use of a registration label and breach of his bail conditions.
The court heard the man was on two counts of active bail when he entered an agreement to buy a $27,000 Nissan Patrol.
Mr Canty allegedly offered to pay an extra $7000 for the vehicle, which was initially advertised on Facebook for $20,000.
He made his way to Portland earlier this week to buy the car, allegedly took it to get a mechanical check and then kept on driving.
The court heard he then sold the vehicle.
Police attended a Portland caravan park and after obtaining consent to search a cabin in which Mr Canty was staying at, located $1000 allegedly left over from the sale of the Nissan Patrol.
Police also seized $225 cash from the man's wallet.
On Friday, Magistrate Franz Holzer said the alleged offending was troubling.
But he said a period spent in custody on remand would likely exceed any sentence of the court.
He granted the man bail with strict conditions.
Mr Canty will appear in court again in January.
Earlier: A 25-year-old Wodonga man has been remanded in custody, charged with taking a car for a mechanical check and not returning it.
Portland police intercepted the driver at 12.30am early Wednesday morning.
The man was arrested, interviewed and charged.
It's alleged he went to buy a car, took it to get a mechanical check and he just kept driving.
He gave police no reason for his alleged offending.
"It was a dodgy car buy," a police spokeswoman said.
The man has been charged with obtaining property by deception, theft of a vehicle, dealing with the proceeds of crime, breaching an intervention order, fraudulent use of a registration label and breach of his bail conditions.
The man appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Wednesday, did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until Friday.
