The 49-year-old man, who cannot be named because that could identify the victim, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates court on Monday to family violence-related offending and was placed on a 12-month community correction order.

The court heard the man's partner was a protected person in a family violence order issued in the same court on November 5 last year.

Less than 20 days later that order was breached when he attended Coles supermarket in Lava Street, yelled at the victim and called her derogatory names.

On another occasion he had been drinking heavily in the presence of the victim, he became enrage and punched a plaster wall, causing extensive damage.

He then punched himself in the head before pushing the victim, causing cuts to her arms.

The victim ran in fear to a neighbouring unit and police were called.

Then on October 18 a full intervention order was granted, prohibiting the man from contacting the victim.

But the court heard the victim stayed with the man in a motel room on Saturday, they had an argument and he began pushing the victim.

He then poured cold tea on her and continued to call her derogatory names.

At the time of the offending, the man was on bail for assaulting another man on November 25 last year who he believed had an intimate relationship with his partner.

On Monday, lawyer Vivian Kenny said the offending against the female victim was humiliating but at "the lower end of the scale".

He said the victim attended at the motel without an invite but the man now understood that it was a matter for him to comply with the intervention order.

Magistrate Mark Stratmann said there were "no excuses for family violence or violence at all".

"The tipping of tea over someone and the words you've used is demeaning in the extreme, and some of the conduct I've heard today is really about control. It's about controlling other people which we can not do."
