The league has reduced its five-team, four-week finals series to a four-team, two-week finals series.
It comes after premier Daniel Andrews, on Wednesday, announced regional Victoria would come out of coronavirus lockdown on Thursday night.
However, football and netball teams are only allowed to train and can't play under the latest restrictions.
South West District media officer Susie Holcombe said the league was following the plan it devised last week.
"We had a meeting last week with all club presidents and they decided moving forward, if we could play by September 11, we would have the normal five-team, four-week finals series," she said.
"If that couldn't happen, then we would go to a four-team, two-week-finals series.
"If government restrictions are not eased by September 24, the finals series and 2021 season will be cancelled."
The league would acknowledge minor premiers in all grades if no finals were played.
Holcombe said the league was hoping for a road map on community sport from the government this week to provide clarity on the situation.
She said it was now hoping more direction would come from the government and then AFL Victoria next week.
It's clear the league wants to finish with finals.
"We're definitely hoping and praying," Holcombe said.
"Just so we can finalise the season, it would be nice considering last year was cancelled altogether."
