The south-west table tennis talent, who also represented Australia at the Olympic Games, won three matches to one to seal the victory.
Tapper started slowly - falling in the first match - before storming home to win the final three games.
Her effort in game three - an 11 points to six triumph - was her biggest success.
The 31-year-old will now play Brazil's Bruna Costa Alexandre on Thursday night. The bout will begin at 6.20 AEST.
Josh Hose's Australian Steelers are licking their wounds after suffering a shock one-point defeat to new Paralympic wheelchair rugby nation Denmark.
The Camperdown export provided support and coaching from the bench but wasn't called upon for minutes on court as his side fell to the Danes 53-54.
Steelers captain Ryley Batt was a standout performer - scoring 24 tries from 25.51 minutes on court - while Chris Bond added 17.
Hose will push his case for court time on Thursday as the Steelers play France at 6.30pm AEST.
Rower Kathryn Ross, who grew up in Warrnambool and now lives in Canberra, will begin her bid for Paralympic gold on Friday with mixed double sculls partner Simon Albury. She will compete in strong form.
