Initial indications from a post mortem are the cause of the infant's death is not suspicious.

Police are preparing a brief of evidence for the state coroner.

On Monday:

A Hamilton family is grieving after the unexpected death of a six-week-old baby early Monday morning.

An autopsy will be conducted which is expected to determine the course of a police investigation.

Warrnambool police Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Asenjo said an alarm was raised just before 5am on Monday.

"Police and emergency services attended at a residential address in Hamilton," he said.

"They responded to a report that an infant at the address was unresponsive.

"As a result the infant was transported by ambulance to the Hamilton Base Hospital and attempts to revive the young child were unsuccessful.

"Victoria police, following standard investigation procedure in relation to the sudden and unexpected death of an infant, notified the Victoria Police homicide squad.

"Local crime investigation unit detectives attended at the home and a forensic examination of the home is being undertaken by experts."

Detective Senior Sergeant Asenjo said all those procedures were standard in relation to the unexpected death of an infant.

He said notification to the homicide quad also triggered involvement of the Victoria Institute Of Forensic Medicine.

"That enables local investigators to have the expert support of the homicide squad and the institute who have specialist training and can give expert advice to local investigators," he said.

"At this stage the cause of the infant's death is unknown and we are just following standard procedures," he said.

Earlier: Police are investigating the death of a six-week old baby in Hamilton.

The Victoria Police homicide squad is in charge of the investigation, which is being conducted by south-west detectives, until they arrive at Hamilton.

So far three potential crime scenes have been identified by police.

The death of the six-week-old baby was reported to the Hamilton police station early Monday morning.
