KEEPING players engaged and providing an outlet during an uncertain year was the main goal for Port Fairy's under 16 football side this season.

Making the finals was an added bonus.
The Craig Fraser-coached team will play Hamilton Kangaroos in a Hampden league semi-final at Terang Recreation Reserve on Sunday.
Win and they're into the grand final.
It comes after the traditional five-team, three-week finals series was replaced with a four-team, two-week schedule after a number of rounds were lost to COVID-19 statewide lockdowns.
"The whole year has been unusual. I think the Hampden league has done a fantastic job, just to get the games to happen," Fraser said.
"They are doing the right thing in trying to get the finals finished because we don't know what will happen with COVID, as we see in Melbourne.
"And I think it's a remarkable opportunity for all four sides to win one game and be in a grand final. It's a very rare thing and something I have never experienced in my football life."
Port Fairy, which finished third, will play second-ranked Hamilton Kangaroos at 1pm.
Top-placed South Warrnambool will meet fourth-ranked Cobden at 2.45pm.
The Seagulls, featuring Oliver Myers and Oscar Pollock who have both played seniors in 2021, were the only team to beat the Roos in the home-and-away season.
"I think they will be a lot more prepared for us than they were last time," Fraser said.
"We have a wide-range of players which I think is really good. We've got a couple of good talls, some really good medium-sized players.
"Even our small players are very football savvy in the way they play the game and sometimes people underestimate those smaller players and that allows our more experienced players to use them."
Football has provided an outlet for the players during an uncertain time.
Likewise for Fraser, who is South West Healthcare's chief executive officer.
He lives in Port Fairy with wife Kim, son Cooper, 17, and daughter Ela, 14.
Cooper plays for the Seagulls' under 18 football side and Ela plays netball at the club.
Fraser said tackling the under 16 job was only possible with the support from his family, work colleagues and Mick Pollock and Nick Roberts.
He said it had been a good fit.
"I think, for us, the whole year has been about a group of young adults coming together and enjoying each other's company," Fraser said.
"What we've spoken about all year as a group is if we work hard success will be more likely and it's exactly what they've done and it's been fantastic.
"From my perspective, the aim was to start with 24 guys in January and finish with 24 and that's exactly what we've done. Each and every player has improved throughout the year."
