They will now face Team USA, which includes NBA superstar Kevin Durant, in the semi-finals on Thursday.

Win that and the Boomers are guaranteed their first Olympic medal, either gold or silver.

Lose to America and Australia will play in the bronze medal match.

The semi-final will be played at 2.15pm Thursday AEST.

Sobey played eight minutes and 54 seconds for eight points, two rebounds and two assists against Argentina.

The Boomers made a shaky start and struggled from the field, finding themselves down by eight points in the first term.

Sobey, running the point, checked into the game with two minutes to play in the opening quarter with the Australians trailing 20-15.

They were 22-18 in arrears at the first change.

Sobey, who represents Brisbane Bullets in the NBL, started the second quarter on the court.

Fellow NBL star Chris Goulding levelled the scores at 24 with a three-pointer before Sobey was subbed out for Matthew Dellavedova.

Patty Mills - the team's most prolific scorer in the pool games - put the Boomers in front with six minutes to play in the first half.

Australia then strangled Argentina, restricting it to six points for much of the quarter before it got off the leash late.

The Boomers had a slender 39-33 lead at the main break with Sobey having played four minutes for two defensive rebounds.

Sobey was brought back into the game with 41 seconds left in the third term when the Australians were holding a 10-point lead.

Dante Exum drove to the basket to add another two before three-quarter-time.

It was party time for Australia in the fourth, going on a 19-0 run to put the game beyond doubt.

Sobey came on with 3.44 remaining in the game.

He drained a three-pointer and was fouled late and added two more to his tally.

A second triple soon followed.
