Locations which may be affected include the Grampians, the Otway Ranges, Bacchus Marsh, the Dandenongs, Warburton and Victoria's main mountains.
A ridge of high pressure over Victoria will move east over the Tasman Sea today as a cold front approaches from the west.
Damaging northerly winds, averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h, are expected to develop within the warning area from later this morning.
Winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds from the west during Saturday.
There is a gale marine wind warning in place.
Today across the south-west will be partly cloudy, there's a slight (20 per cent) chance of a shower with winds northerly 30 to 45 km/h.
A weak ridge over eastern Victoria will move to the east today as a cold front builds over the Bight.
The front is expected to cross Victoria later on Saturday and early on Sunday, while a low pressure system will move over waters south of the Bight later on Sunday.
This low will move to the south-west on Monday as an associated cold front crosses the state.

At 7.30am in Warrnambool it was 7.8 degrees, felt like a brisk 0.7 and we've already had a wind gust of 43 km/h at 5am.
At Mount William it was 3.0 degrees, feels like -7.8 and the wind is already blowing at up to 74 km/h.
Warrnambool is expecting a top temperature of 15 degrees, Hamilton 13, Colac 13, Ararat 11, Casterton 15, Mortlake 13, Heywood 15, Portland 15, Port Fairy 15, Terang 13 and Camperdown 13.
For the week ahead - Warrnambool is expecting up to 10mm of rain and a top of 14 on Saturday, Sunday showers 13, Monday showers 14, Tuesday showers 12, Wednesday showers 13 and Thursday showers 13.
