The snow level is lowering to 900 metres at night which means Mount William at Halls Gap could get a dusting.
There's the chance of a thunderstorm with gusty winds and possible small hail.
Winds will be north-westerly 25 to 35 km/h and daytime maximum temperatures around 12 degrees.
Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, rain and showers are expected to extend from the west today, accompanied by strong and gusty north-westerly winds, continuing on Saturday with winds tending south-westerly.
There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.
A low pressure system well to the south-west of the state is directing a north-westerly airstream across Victoria.
A weak trough embedded within this airstream will cross eastern parts of the state during Friday, while a strong cold front approaches from the west.
The front will cross Victoria during Saturday, with flow shifting southwesterly. A ridge of high pressure will strengthen over the state from the northwest on Sunday, before another cold front approaches from the west during Monday.
Today Warrnambool is expecting a top of 14 degrees, Hamilton 12, Colac 12, Ararat 11, Casterton 12, Mortlake 12, Heywood 14, Portland 14, Port Fairy 14, Terang 12 and Camperdown 12.
The outloook for Saturday is much the same - cloudy, 95 per cent chance of showers, snow falling above 800 metres, the chance of a thunderstorm in the morning and afternoon with gusty winds and possible hail.
Winds north-westerly 25 to 35 km/h will be turning south-westerly during Saturday morning.
Overnight temperatures will fall to around 4 degrees with daytime temperatures reaching around 11 or 12.
