The ladder leading Bombers overcame second-placed South Warrnambool on Saturday and had to play every which way to get the job done.

Sophie Hinkley's side started brilliantly, performing to its gameplan, before proving it can win ugly as the game descended to a scrap in the second half.

"Both teams were making lots of errors but I'm super happy we were able to compose ourselves and come through against a good opposition," she told The Standard.

"We know things don't always go your way when you're playing things like finals and there will always be those different scenarios where goals aren't dropping or things are going wrong.

"We think it's important to be able to adapt when things aren't going your way and grind through."

Hinkley said former mentor Nadine McNamara was proving vital in a defensive role.

McNamara was best on court and filled a key role in the absence of Jess Wheadon and Jaymie Finch.

"She's amazing. Just her awareness and ability to support the people around her," Hinkley said.

"She's so valuable to us when she's playing in partnership with Remeny McCann, who is so naturally athletic and talented.

"Nadine sets up that structure and communicates on the court. She's able to really dictate and set up that defensive end and that allows us to take a lot of intercepts.

"She's really like having a coach on the court."

Cobden will face Terang Mortlake this coming Saturday.

The Bombers are now six points clear of South Warrnambool in second place.
