A council spokesman said the sign was not ordered or authorised by its infrastructure team.
"While many of us might agree with the overall sentiment expressed by the sign, councils traditionally avoid colourful or vulgar language and seek to encourage positive behaviours rather than belittle those not doing the right thing," the spokesman said.
"Our Local Laws team will remove the sign."
In a survey conducted by The Standard, 98 per cent said they'd like to see the sign stay.
Earlier: A cheeky sign has appeared at the Warrnambool foreshore urging people to clean up after their dogs.
The tongue-in-cheek sign asks people why they are not picking up their dog droppings and lists possible excuses as:
- I'm a jerk
- I don't care about this area or the community
- I'm lazy
- Mummy still cleans up after me.
The professionally-made sign asks people to pick up their dog's poo and litter.
The Standard chatted with the anonymous person who placed the signs on the fence.
They said they were a proud user of the city's foreshore.
"I'm sick of seeing poo - funnily enough it's often bagged up," they said.
"Some people pick it up but then just throw the bag and poo aside.
"I thought it might be a bit of a fun thing to put the signs up. It's such a prominent Warrnambool area with the amount of people that walk past there it gets plenty of exposure.
"We all know not picking up dog poo is wrong and we all know we should put it in the bin. There's many signs out there, but people don't heed the matter - I thought I would try a different tact."
