But that's the case at Koala Childcare and Early Learning Centre in Warrnambool.
Melissa Hansford has been an educator at the centre for about four years.
Her daughter Rubie Ross, 4, attends the centre and Carol Hansford, Melissa's mother has recently started as an educator in the three-year-old room.
Centre service manager Gill Marsden said she was looking for more staff and asked Melissa if she knew anyone who may be interested.
"We had a few people leaving and we needed some new staff," Melissa said.
"I knew mum always wanted to get into childcare so I told Gill my mum might be interested."
Carol, who has worked in disability services, aged care, at a supermarket and as a cleaner said she jumped at the chance.
She started two weeks ago and is delighted to get to see her granddaughter at work each morning.
Rubie is in a separate building but will visit "nan" before she goes into her room each day and wave across the carpark when she gets a chance.
Melissa said Rubie was very excited to learn she would have two family members at the centre.
Carol, 51, is studying childcare and said she was excited about her new career path.
"It's been really good," she said.
"I enjoy looking after people."
Carol said she was enjoying a new challenge.
"It's a bit daunting, but rewarding," she said.
"We're a family who enjoys looking after people."
Ms Marsden said the centre, which was owned by Story House Early Learning, was delighted to have the mother and daughter educators.
She said Carol was fitting in well.
"She's a nurturer," Ms Marsden said. "It's great to have a balance of younger and mature staff."
She said the centre, which expanded three years ago, was licensed to care for 162 children a day.
Children aged from six weeks to school aged are cared for in 11 rooms at the Lava Street centre.
"We're pretty much full," she said.
"This has probably been our busiest year, which is why we need more educators."
Ms Marsden encouraged people interested in a role to contact the centre.
"We're always looking to add to our Koala team," she said.
Three-year-old kindergarten will also be offered at the centre next year.
