Neville Crane hopes the lure of playing veterans cricket might encourage those to shelve their retirement plans.

Crane, on behalf of the Veterans Cricket Victoria board, said it was seeking interest from players, aged 50 and over, about forming teams in the Western District.

There are already discussions taking place about a potential team in Camperdown.

"We already have three over 50 teams in Geelong and two over 60 teams in Geelong, an over 60s team in Ballarat and an over 60s team in Hamilton," he said.

"There is also a very strong over 60s team in Mount Gambier. The longer-term aim in the next couple of seasons is to have additional over 50 teams in Hamilton and Ballarat, in addition to the two new teams mentioned at Camperdown, so that it is possible to organise a viable Western Victoria Region competition.

"Teams in the Western Region would then have the option of competing in a regional and or state competition.

"Ideally we envisage Warrnambool having their own veterans club in the next couple of years."

There are currently more than 4000 registered veteran cricketers across Australia spread across three men's age groups - over 50, over 60 and over 70 - and a women's section.

Benefits of veterans cricket are both physical and mental.

It can help improve or maintain fitness, encourage a better diet, provide companionship and is inclusive towards spouses and family members.

Crane said there were also opportunities for players to represent their respective states or even play for Australia.
