A severe weather warning has now been issued for the south-west relating to damaging winds.
A low pressure system is developing over Western Victoria this morning and afternoon associated with a cold front gradually crossing the state
Damaging southerly winds, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h, are possible over parts of south-west Victoria this afternoon, particularly about coastal and elevated locations.
Winds will possibly become damaging during the early afternoon, and are expected to gradually ease during the evening.
Locations which may be affected include Warrnambool, Hamilton, Portland, Edenhope, Nelson and Casterton.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
- Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
- Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
- Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
- Stay indoors and away from windows.
- If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
- Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
- Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
- Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.
Earlier: Today across the south-west there is a sheep graziers weather alert in place - the benchmark for very ordinary weather.
Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and north-west to south-westerly winds are expected during Monday as a cold front crosses Victoria.
Areas likely to be affected include parts of the south-west, Wimmera, Northern Country, North Central and Central forecast districts.
There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.
At 7am in Warrnambool it was 12.5 degrees, and felt like just 6.6 degrees.
Today the south-west will receive showers (yes it is raining in Warrnambool at 7.30am) which will become less frequent as the day progresses.
Winds will be northerly 20 to 30 km/h becoming light in the early afternoon then becoming southerly 30 to 40 km/h in the late afternoon.
Top temperatures across the south-west will be in the mid teens - between 14 and 16 degrees.
For the week ahead in the south-west - Tuesday will be cloudy 15 with just a 20 per cent chance of rain, Wednesday will be mostly sunny 17, Thursday we're expecting a shower or two 17, Friday 80 per cent chance of rain 15, Saturday 60 per cent chance of showers 15 and Sunday a 70 per cent chance of showers, again 15 degrees.
