WINNER: Popular jumps jockey Tom Ryan failed to win the Grand Annual Steeplechase but he was a big winner off the track. Ryan proposed to his partner of four years, Jemima Draper, after the Grand Annual. The Irish-born jumps jockey revealed his brother Darren was carrying the engagement ring around in his pocket for most of the day before he proposed.
TROUBLE: Numerous jockeys felt the wrath of the stewards on the final day of the carnival. Clayton Douglas copped a $1000 fine for a whip breach after his winning ride on Gold Medals in the Grand Annual. John Allen was outed for 20 meetings on a careless riding charge following his ride on Heart Of Puissance in the Warrnambool Cup. Allen's suspension starts midnight May 9. Local apprentice jockey Melissa Julius will be on the sidelines for nine meetings after she pleaded guilty to a careless riding charge on Caliburn. Her suspension starts midnight May 6. Warrnambool Cup-winning jockey Mark Zahra pleaded not guilty to a careless riding charge after he rode Lion's Share. Stewards gave him 12 meetings. His suspension is due to start on May 8.
FRONT: Some well-backed runners gave punters the edge over the bookies on the final day. Gold Medals and Le Don De Vie were strongly supported with the bookies before they landed the chocolates. Over The Sky was heavily backed and got the money in the last of 30 races.
INTERESTING: Local racing stalwarts Frank Beattie and Leo Dwyer were presented with honorary life membership of the Warrnambool Racing Club for their services to racing on Thursday. Beattie, who wore his pork-pie hat for 55 years as a steward, failed to wear the trademark garb for the next race after his presentation, saying the hat was still on the stewards' room table. Dwyer was the clerk-of-course for 58 years. Beattie and Dwyer join Ray Murrihy, Des Gleeson and Neville Wilson as honorary life members of the club.
